The most exciting views of Rome which capture its aggregated nature are either the ones from the hills or the ones looking into the hills.
The shy skyline observed from a hill communicates the constant historical uncertainty of urban life under the changing power structures visible as layers on the Roman hills. While hills were used as natural props for built expressions of power, inevitable “hills of power” emerged across the low areas of the city to infiltrate the everyday lives.
